Deshae Wise, a graduate student-athlete at Texas A&M and a four-time Oregon School Activities Association 6A state champion during her prep career at Grants Pass High, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss her return to Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., for the first time since 2017 to compete June 9-11 at the NCAA Division 1 Outdoor Championships. Wise, who attended Cal Berkeley before competing during the indoor and outdoor seasons this year for Texas A&M, is one of three female athletes to have qualified for the NCAA semifinals in both the 100-meter hurdles and 400-meter hurdles, joining Masai Russell of Kentucky and Shani'a Bellamy of Coastal Carolina. Russell and Wise have joined U.S. Olympian and Nike professional Anna Cockrell, last year's Division 1 champion in the 100 hurdles and 400 hurdles representing USC, as the only three women's competitors in the world this year to have run sub-13 in the 100 hurdles and under 56 seconds in the 400 hurdles. Wise reflects on her disappointment of not advancing to the NCAA Championships at last year's West Regional meet at Texas A&M in her final competition for Cal and how she has used those experiences as motivation to qualify this year. She revisits competing in the 60-meter hurdles and running on the 4x400-meter relay for the Aggies during the indoor season and how it helped her build confidence toward achieving success during the spring outdoor schedule. Wise explains how significant it was to run a wind-aided 12.90 seconds in the 100 hurdles, her first career sub-13 performance, at the West Regionals in Arkansas, along with how motivating it was to clock 55.99 and be part of the Southeastern Conference 400-meter hurdles final with Britton Wilson of Arkansas, Anna Hall of Florida and Russell. She analyzes the potential for Texas A&M to contend for a team podium finish and examines the depth of the Aggies' lineup, including Kaylah Robinson in the 100 hurdles. She also reminisces about her experiences at the OSAA state meet, capturing her first 6A state crown in the 100 hurdles in 2016, and especially in 2017 when she accounted for 31.5 points after winning 6A titles in the 100-meter dash, 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles and placing third in the 4x100 relay to help Grants Pass secure third overall with 51 points. Wise also looks forward to competing June 23-26 at the USATF Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field.
